FONT: Creating Headers for your Digital Portfolio
In today’s digital landscape—more than ever—people are aware of typography, design and how the world looks around them. Gary Hustwit records this in Helvetica, a documentary about how fonts affect our everyday lives. Most notably, Helvetica ushers in the larger conversation about global visual culture, detailing how and why people are progressively more mindful about the visual impact of design.
“THE WORLD IS FULL OF BEAUTIFUL FONTS—CHOOSING THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOUR NEXT PROJECT CAN BE A DAUNTING TASK.” When working with a digital marketing agency, it is important to be prepared to discuss fonts during the creative process. And you may hear terms like sans serif, slab serif, or script—but this isn’t a bunch of mumbo jumbo, it’s science! |
The last 2 weeks, we watched the film, Helvetica and starting looking at what FONT truly is. Please start each week by reviewing those notes.
Student Task(s): Watch and take notes on the film, Helvetica.
Helvetica is a feature-length documentary about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. |

If you’ve ever used a word processor, you probably have a basic understanding of what we mean by “font.” However, when working on a design project where font is essential for conveying meaning, you have to understand the difference between type, typeface, and font.
- Type is the generic term for everything that goes into visual text, although it originally referred to the actual pieces of wood or metal used to create physical letters.
- Typography is the phrase designers use to refer to the style and appearance of printed text. Designers can specialize in typography, the art of designing and arranging text visually.
- Typeface, or font family, is an alphabet designed so that all the letters and symbols have similar features. For instance, Times, Arial, and Minion are all typefaces.
- Font, then, refers to the specific style of a typeface. Arial Black is a font of the Arial typeface. Minion Pro Italic is a font belonging to the Minion font family.

1. Create a "Headers Project" folder inside your Digital Art folder.

Please note that moving to a different computer during this project will make you (really me) re-install that font on each new computer you sit at. 3. Download at least 1 font that visually represents every class (2 per class would be better). Make sure the font you choose is visually harmonious to the content covered in that class.
4. SAVE AS large, high resolution photos to your "Headers Project" folder on the Drive. Make sure the images you choose are visually harmonious to the content covered in your classes. 5.
