WELCOME BACK ADVISORY!!!
2020 - 2024
January 12th Advisory Agenda:
COLLEGE AND CAREER PREP PORTION -
Overview: Students will listen to a podcast about education and training after high school other than a Bachelor's degree that leads to well paying careers in the trades. You will provide an explanation of the difference between an Associates Degree and an Associates of Applied Science degree. Finally, you will browse the San Juan College Website and identify some of the programs that offer A.A.S. degrees.
- Play the following Podcasts (appx 26 min):
- Finding your way to a (High Paying) trade job
- High paying trade jobs sit empty, while high school grads line up for university
ONE of the most popular and affordable ways to get education and training that will lead to a career in the trades is at a community college with an Associates of Applied Science degree. Read the Italic text below to explain the difference between an Associate of Arts or Science (AA/AS) and an Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS):
Associate’s Degree, Simplified
It’s easy to miss the difference for the two-year degrees, so let’s break out “associate degree” and show what the two types cover.
Both the Associate of Arts (A.A.) and the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees are two-year degrees, but their purposes are very different. Think of the A.A. as a starter degree that leads to knowledge within a subject and the A.A.S. as a degree for those who want to enter a specialized workforce as soon as possible.
The coursework for students in A.A.S. degree program is hands-on and involves time in laboratory and clinical settings that are specific to the degree program. For example, a student who wants to become a radiologic technologist would spend time in the radiology lab and doing fieldwork in real-world clinical settings. This is much different than a student in an A.A. degree program that is attending lecture courses and taking general education classes that could later be applied to a bachelor’s degree.

January 5th Advisory Agenda:
- "I love you so much. We will honor life and loss next week together when I return. I'm sorry I can't be with you, but upon worsening Covid symptoms today I just had to put my health first and rest so that I can return and be there for you 110%."
Advisory Assignment - Write a letter to your future self, fold it up and turn in to be returned to you Senior year.
PROMPTS:
- What would you want the senior you to look back on and remember about you in this moment of time and space?
- Who are your friends? What do you value about them?
- What are your interests, hopes and dreams for the remaining time in high school?
- What support do you have?
- What support do you hope to gain before you leave high school?
- What is really going on for you during this stage of your life?
Letter should be at least a page long if hand written and you should spend at least 45 minutes just writing. Don't worry about sentence structure or any of that - Just write from your heart.
Example intro from Roxy,
Dear Future Self,
Please don't be harsh in your judgment of how I might appear to you now. Please know that I have had an incredibly hard two years and am literally doing the best I can just to keep my head above water. I have found the deepest purpose imaginable in my life's work - teaching and connecting with teenage humans. They inspire me day in and day out with their willingness to accept change and their humble nature in wanting to grow. I myself am looking inward and diving deeper into myself than I ever have with my therapy and desire to grow not only as a human but an artist. It is this year 2022 that I have committed to take more art classes and put myself out into the community again as a practicing artist, not just a teacher. I wish to inspire not only in the classroom but beyonds it's walls in meaningful beautiful work. etc....
Sincerely,
Roxy that is currently trying her best to live and lead with an open vulnerable heart.

Weekly Updates from Jess (Adams) Morrison (FALL 2019)
Hello seniors and parents,
I hope you all had a great three day weekend and enjoyed the sunshine! This is the weekly college update that I promised to all of you throughout this fall. Please review the information provided and let me know if you have any questions.
First, thank you to all parents and students who were able to attend my Senior/Parent College Night last week. We had a fantastic turnout! If you have missed this event you can access all of the information I discussed HERE.
Next, today I was in Ashley's Humanities classes working with students to learn how to match their CommonApp accounts with Naviance as well as how we will submit transcripts and other college documents. I will be working with seniors in Sara's Humanities class this Thursday. Students can also access resources on how to do these tasks by using my DP. I have provided videos for students to follow under the Naviance tab.
Also, as I have referred in emails and in my college night if your student is planning on applying to college for an Early Decision or Early Action Deadline (November 1st-December 1st) students must complete ALL of the items on the ED/EA Checklist by October 1st, 2020 in order for Animas to provide documentation needed by the application deadline.
Additionally, we have many colleges and scholarship committees who are starting to schedule admission visits at Animas High School. Each admission visit is uploaded to the school calendar on AHS website, as well as is listed on my Admission Visits tab of my DP. Below are upcoming admission visits from colleges:
Next to last, I will provide support to students working on their college applications via three workshops after school. The first workshop will be offered on Wednesday, October 2nd from 3:30-5:30pm.
Second to last, some scholarship applications have started to open for the season. I have listed below some of the scholarships I am aware of. Please review the notes I have listed next to each scholarship to determine if it is a good fit for your student.
Boettcher Scholarship Application Opens- Make sure to take the competitiveness quiz for this scholarship since it is highly competitive.
Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Application Open- This scholarship will have financial eligibility requirements
ELKS MVP National Scholarship Application Open- We have an information session for this scholarship at Animas on Thursday, October 3rd
Coca Cola Scholarship Application Open
Quest Bridge Scholarship Application Open- This scholarship will have financial eligibility requirements
Lastly, the state of Colorado has launched the second annual Colorado Free Application Day on October 15th. You can learn more details about applying and accessing a free application for Colorado colleges and universities HERE.
Absolute final thing, I will be out of the office this Friday, September 6th and will not have access to email. I will return all communication the following Monday.
Have a great rest of your week.

- Have you finished all work for your electives? Or how do you plan to finish your work for electives on time?
2/14/19: DAY OF OUR LOVE
HOW TO:
- Introduce the Concept of Practicing Gratitude--taking time to identify what you appreciate can make you more intentional about recognizing things in your life that make you grateful
- Brainstorm things about Animas High School that folks in your Advisory Group love and appreciate--encourage your advisees to be specific--generate statements that go beyond “The student-teacher relationships”--it’s okay to have specific names in the statements but encourage some statements that are generalized, too--this should result in words that go beyond our “brochure-speak”
- Start with advisor sharing a specific moment/story at Animas that makes you grateful to work here. Share your “I’m in the right place for me” moment.
- Ask advisees to share out:
- What keeps you at Animas? What’s the moment that epitomizes what you think is pretty cool about AHS?
- Make your Valentine to AHS
- Work together to plan it out (Beautiful work!)
- Make sure it’s clear that it’s your advisory group’s Valentine to the school (i.e. everyone signs it OR you write “Susy’s Advisory” on it)
- Decorate it and write on it!
- Hang it up outside your classroom/office for all to see!
1/30/19
Our to Do LIST:
- Friday is Advisory Olympics until 12:30 and no catered lunch
- Yes, it's required to attend (and it will be fun!)
- We'll start with breakfast with your advisory group, then we'll have Snowdown Advisory Parade, then 7 activities, and closing ceremony
- Plan breakfast--who will bring what?
- WATCH: Soul Train video (for the Parade)
- Plan our ComicCon themed costumes -- think signs, flags
- Start working on our dance for the parade -- We'll have another 30 minutes Friday morning to perfect your sweet dance moves
- Youtube ComicCon videos for inspiration!

- What healthy coping mechanisms do you/your peers use when you’re stressed or struggling, rather than using drugs or alcohol?
- For those of you who don’t use illegal substances (and we know the majority of students aren’t using)....why do you choose not to use? What strategies do you have/see that work well for dealing with peer pressure when some teens are using and others choose not to?
